 COMPOUND ADJECTIVES
Tính từ Ghép

  VD1: So sánh hai câu sau:

 * I saw a man-eating alligator. => see sth

 Tôi thấy một con cá sấu đang ăn một người đàn ông.

 * I saw a man eating alligator. => see sb doing sth

 Tôi thấy một người đàn ông đang ăn thịt cá sấu.

 => A hyphen can make a difference in meaning.

 => Một dấu gạch nối có thể tạo thành một nghĩa khác.

 We are describing the alligator. What type of alligator is it? It is one that eats men (or people).

 Chúng ta đang mô tả con cá sấu. Đó là con cá sấu loại gì? Nó là loại ăn thịt con người.

 I saw a man eating alligator.

 Tôi thấy một người đàn ông đang ăn thịt cá sấu.

 This sentence without the hyphen sounds like a man is eating an alligator.

 Câu này không có dấu gạch nối có vẻ là một người đàn ông đang ăn một con cá sấu.

 => man is the subject, eating is the verb, alligator is the object or thing that is being eaten.

 => “man” là chủ từ, “eating” là động từ, “alligator” là túc từ hoặc thứ đang bị ăn.

 As you can see, the hyphen (or lack of it) makes a big difference in the meaning of the sentence.

 Như các bạn thấy đó, dấu gạch nối (hoặc thiếu dấu gạch nối) tạo ra một sự khác biệt lớn đối với nghĩa của câu.

 VD2: Tương tự

 * I’m a small-business owner!

 Tôi là chủ doanh nghiệp nhỏ.

 => a small-business owner (hyphenated, compound) means that the person owns a business, which is small in size.

 => “a small-business owner” (có gạch nối) nghĩa là người đó làm chủ một công ty nhỏ, công ty có quy mô nhỏ.

 * I’m not a small business owner!

 Tôi không phải là một chủ doanh nghiệp thấp bé!

 => “a small business owner” (no hyphen) means that the owner (person) is small in size,

 => “a small business owner” (không dấu gạch nối) có nghĩa là người chủ là một người có sắc vóc nhỏ bé.
Before explaining in more detail why we put that hyphen between those two words in the first sentence, we need to do a quick review of Adjectives.

 Trước khi giải thích cặn kẻ hơn lý do vì sau chúng ta đặt dấu gạch nối đó giữa hai từ ở câu đầu tiên, chúng ta cần ôn lướt qua các Tính từ nhé.

 What is an adjective? = Tính từ là gì?

 An adjective is a word that describes something. = Tính từ là một từ mô tả cái gì đó.

 VD: A red car (red is an adjective because it describes the car. How is the car? Red)

 Một xe hơi màu đỏ.

 => “red” là tính từ vì nó mô tả chiếc xe hơi. Xe hơi thế nào? => (Xe hơi) Màu đỏ.

 A big book (big is an adjective because it describes the book. How is the book? Big)

 Một quyển sách lớn.

 => “big” là tính từ vì nó mô tả quyển sách. Quyển sách thế nào? => Lớn.

 But sometimes we use more than one adjective to describe something.

 Nhưng đôi khi chúng ta dùng hơn một tính từ để mô tả cái gì đó.

 Đó là các Compound Adjectives – Tính từ Ghép

 A compound adjective is an adjective that contains two or more words.

 Một tính từ kép là một tính từ chứa hai hoặc hơn hai từ.

 In general we put a hyphen between two or more words (before a noun) when we want them to act as a single idea (adjective) that describes something.

 Nói chung chúng ta đặt một dấu gạch nối giữa hai hay nhiều hơn hai từ (trước một danh từ) khi chúng ta muốn chúng làm nhiệm vụ của một tính từ là mô tả một cái gì.

 I live in an English-speaking country.

 Tôi sống ở một đất nước nói tiếng Anh.

 English-speaking is an adjective (used to describe the country). We use a hyphen to connect the word English with speaking to show that it is one adjective (or one idea).

 => “English-speaking” là một tính từ (được dùng để mô tả đất nước này). Chúng ta dùng một dấu gạch nối để nối từ “English” với “speaking” để ngụ ý rắng đó là một tính từ (hoặc là một ý nghĩ/ý tưởng).

 This adjective with two words joined by the hyphen is called a compound adjective.

 Tính từ gồm hai từ được nối với nhau bằng dấu gạch nối này được gọi là một tính từ ghép.

 There are many types of Compound Adjectives. Here is a list of the most common types:

 1. Number + – + noun (e.g. fifty-seat bus)

 Use a number to create a compound adjective to describe age, length, size, time etc.

 Notice how we normally write the number as a word, not in numerical form.

 Chú ý cách chúng ta thường viết con số ở dạng từ, không viết theo dạng số.

 I work eight hours every day --> I work an eight-hour day. (not: an 8-hour day)

 I’m going on vacation for three weeks --> I have a three-week vacation

 There was a delay of 5 seconds --> There was a five-second delay

 Our office is in a twenty-storey building.

 Văn phòng chúng tôi là một tòa nhà 20 tầng.

 I have just finished reading a three hundred-page book.

 Tôi vừa đọc xong một quyển sách 300 trang.

 Such adjectives may refer to the following categories:

 Các tính từ như vậy có thể đề cập đến các danh mục sau:

 Age a one-year-old baby

 Area a sixty-acre farm

 Depth a two- meter deep lake

 Duration a forty-minute lecture

 Length a twenty-centimeter ruler

 Price a hundred-dollar dress

 Time (or distance) a two-hour drive

 Weight a hundred-gram package

 Note: A common mistake that people make is to add an ‘s’ to the number for plural.

 Lỗi phổ biến là người ta hay thêm “-s” vào danh từ được nối với số đếm từ hai trở lên (danh từ này đang làm chức năng tính từ do đó không thể ở dạng số nhiều).

 For example:

 INCORRECT CORRECT

 a hundred-dollars dress a hundred-dollar dress

 a two-hours drive a two-hour drive

 Remember!

 SINGULAR PLURAL

 a forty-minute lecture => two forty-minute lectures

 một bài diễn văn dài 40 phút => hai bài diễn văn (mỗi bài) dài 40 phút

 a two-meter deep lake => three two-meter deep lakes

 một cái hồ sâu hai mét => ba cái hồ (mỗi cái) sâu hai mét

 9. Compound Adjectives with Proper Nouns

 A proper noun is the name of something or someone (e.g. John, Susan Sanders).

 Một danh từ riêng là tên của ai hoặc cái gì (vd: John, Susan Sanders, New York…)

 Compound Adjectives made from Proper nouns don’t need a hyphen though must have capital letters.

 Tính từ ghép tạo thành các danh từ riêng không cần có dấu gạch nối mặc dù vậy chúng ta phải viết hoa các từ đó.

 I bought the James Jackson tickets for us.
